March 10, 2010

Dear Business Partner,

In an attempt to provide a clearer process for tracking special events and potentially hazardous activities, the Fire District is implementing an Operational Permit program. There will be no fee to obtain these permits.

The following types of activities will require an Operational Permit:

o     Carnivals and Fairs
o     Cutting and Welding (hot work)
o     Exhibits and trade shows
o     Explosives
o     Use of a fire hydrant
o     Use and storage of flammable and combustible liquids (in excess of amounts necessary for routing maintenance)
o     Hazardous materials storage (in excess of amounts in table 105.6.20 of the IFC)
o     High piled storage exceeding 500 square feet.
o     Fueled vehicles or equipment inside assembly areas.
o     Open Burning
o     Open flames and torches in hazardous fire area
o     Open flames and candles in assembly areas, dining areas or drinking establishments.
o     Places of Public Assembly
o     Pyrotechnic special effects, including fireworks
o     Temporary membrane structures, tents, and canopies.

Through this program we hope to establish a partnership with the community that is focused on identifying solutions rather than creating unnecessary regulation.   The Fire District is committed to providing for public safety, while allowing for successful special activities. We recognize that last minute changes to these activities create a hardship for your business. Through this process we hope to identify problems well ahead of the event, so that corrections can be made in a timely manner.

We understand that new processes can create uncertainty for the business community. To address these issues, we will be holding a meeting to discuss your concerns and the implementation of this permit process on March 31, 2010 at 1:00 PM at the Round Hill Fire Station. If you are unable to attend, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail mnovak@tahoefire.com with any questions or concerns.

We hope to implement this process in early April. Operational Permit applications will be available at the Round Hill Fire Station or at www.zephyrfiresafe.org under the Fire Prevention tab.

Sincerely

Mark Novak
Fire Marshal
